Chloe Grace Moretz is slamming her own movie’s marketing campaign for fat-shaming as part of a promotion she says she and her team never approved.

Across the Cannes Film Festival, which wrapped up on May 28, some attendees tweeted outrage over a poster publicizing upcoming cartoon Red Shoes & the 7 Dwarfs, in which Moretz’s voice appears. The tagline for the film reads “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful…” beside an image of an overweight character.

This, of course, amounted to fury from passersby, who said the campaign’s message was dangerous. And once Moretz got word of the promo, she spoke out, too.

“I have now fully reviewed the mkting for Red Shoes, I am just as appalled and angry as everyone else, this wasn’t approved by me or my team,” she tweeted. “The actual story is powerful for young women and resonated with me. I am sorry for the offense that was beyond my creative control.”

“Pls know I have let the producers of the film know. I lent my voice to a beautiful script that I hope you will all see in its entirety,” she concluded.

And Moretz’s followers seemed encouraged that she decided to speak up.

“Thank you for responding so quickly. I’m 40 and I was heartbroken to see this marketing campaign; I can’t imagine the impact to young girls,” one wrote, while another noted “Thanks for standing up against body shaming and fatphobia.”
